Micah and I were catching up on “Modern Family” on Friday night. It was the episode where Claire and Cam want to buy a house to flip and Claire is complaining to Cam about how she wants to get a job so she can contribute just a little to their family finances and they can travel and give back to the community and stuff. And then she pauses and says, “There’s also this pair of boots.”
Cam, in total solidarity with her on this one, says, “Of course. There’s always a pair of boots.”
There was a moment of silence between Micah and I before I said, “They are so spot on.” And we laughed because, really, they were SO SPOT ON.
Just last week I decided that the outfit I was wearing to church could really benefit from a pair of knee-high black boots. And wouldn’t it be nice if I could just get a job, something consistent that I could work at a few hours a week and get paid so I can get those boots?
Actually, it’s been a long time that I’ve been thinking that. I mean, that was always part of the plan. I write, I freelance, I get stuff published, I get paid. (Not necessarily buy some boots, but whatever.)
But while I’ve been doing a lot of writing, there hasn’t been much freelancing or getting paid.
Earlier this year I thought I should move forward. For the past couple of months I’ve been coming up with alternative plans: I’ve been thinking about freelance copywriting, or scrapping Mother Runner to put more of my time into freelancing. And I talked to my friends who are into writing and blogging to see if they had any leads.
Last week, something came up. I owe a lot to my friend Mara of A Blog About Love, but I got a job and starting this Friday I’ll be writing for Babble.com’s Health and Fitness channel. I’ll be posting 5 times a week about health and fitness related issues.
It is a little daunting, a little more than I expected. It’s going to require more of my time than I anticipated spending, at least at first, and so I’m going to have to adapt to accommodate it more than I hoped. I’m not at all sure what those adaptations are going to look like, but I’m pretty sure this blog is going to bear the brunt of it. My hope, and my goal, is still to post on Mother Runner 5 days a week, as I have been doing for the past 2 1/2 years. But the content will likely change, at least a little. Expect to see me linking to my work on Babble.com weekly. Expect my posts here to be more creative writing and/or photobased. And, perhaps, expect me to only post here a few times a week, at least for a little while.
We’ll see how things go.
Oh, and expect a minute-by-minute account of my first ever shopping-for-fashion-boots experience, right here on Mother Runner. If it ever happens.
