Ahhhh-ctober

September is gone, but October is here. I can feel it in my bones and I love the way it tingles.

Squish is sleeping in a pair of Manchild’s old pajamas that are too big for him. But they have monsters on them, and it’s October. The size of the pajamas is less important than their seasonality.

I’m aching to put sweaters on every day now. No matter that it is not quite cold enough for such things, nor that I end up walking myself into a sweat when I wear them (while wearing Little Miss and pushing the boys in the stroller with buggy board). It’s fall and fall means sweaters.

We’ve been playing “I Spy” a lot as we walk around these days. There’s a good bet if someone spies something “reddish orange” or “yellow” it’s the leaves on a nearby tree. Pretty soon they’ll all have fallen and we’ll be looking for piles of them to kick around and crunch through.

I’m scheming to go through as many cans of pumpkin as I can this year. There is a pumpkin cake I’ll be making for my sister’s birthday on Saturday, pumpkin gnocchi for dinner this week, pumpkin muffins for breakfast, and pumpkin doughnuts for a special treat sometime soon. Any additional recommendations? Please leave recipes/ideas in the comments.

  1. I made this last week. SO good, but spicy. http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2011/11/ethiopian-spiced-pumpkin-bisque.html

It does look tasty. I’ll have to tame the spices for the kiddos, but it’s on my list. Thanks.

  2. We are loving the changing seasons too. Thanks for the pumpkin recipes. We just harvested almost 30 from our front yard and I’ve been hunting for tasty recipes. Just tell me – do you really own a doughnut pan, or will you be making them into muffins? They look so much more fun as doughnuts but the thought of storing another specialty pan turns me off.

Oh, they’ll be muffins. I certainly can’t stand the thought of a specialty pan I’d use a couple of times a year when I barely have enough room for “essential” items. I’d love to hear what you do with all your pumpkin, though I imagine much of it will be canned for later?

  3. We made gnocchi last week, which I thought was a big hit. I’ve got pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin soup in mind. We’ll freeze some of it to be used for later. But mostly, we’ll give pumpkins away to our friends as gifts.

Do you remember when I made pumpkin cheesecake for Micah’s birthday? Or maybe you were married by then. Probably. But I found that it turns out better if you remember to take it out of the oven. It’s less black and charcoal-like. 🙂 Hope yours turns out great.

  4. I love pumpkin-chocolate-chip cookies. And, I had a GREAT pumpkin soup at a restaurant and now I want to try out recipes to figure it out. 🙂

Oh . . . pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I have to be careful that I don’t eat the whole batch at once. Yum.
