In anticipation of the many hours I will spend in my rocker with my baby in the dark of morning, I sent out a call for book recommendations. I honestly look forward to those hours and to the time I get to spend reading something engrossing while I cuddle with my baby. My call was answered loud and clear: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand should be at the top of my list.

I’ve been reading it while I nurse and was sad and a little disappointed earlier today when I turned the page and realized I was already to the epilogue. Such an engaging story. Such a heroic protagonist. Such an inspiring story. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at the direction it was going for a little while, but then Billy Graham enters the scene, Louie does a 180 degree turn, and I, too, am pierced with self-recognition.
It’s a story of redemption and forgiveness under the most difficult of circumstances which, of course, would be enough on it’s own. But there’s also the bonus aspects: Running! Olympics! Adventure! Survival! Friendship! Teamwork! Victory! And the feeling that human beings really are capable of accomplishing anything, of overcoming anything if they realize that they are worth something, that God loves them, that they are His children.
Totally worth a week of 3am feedings.
Any suggestions for other books that are worth turning on the light at such an hour?
