Staying in Shape Through Pregnancy: Let’s Talk Hydration

It’s a balancing act. Drinking enough water to ensure you have enough energy to do what you need to do, but not so much that you spend your whole workout thinking about the restroom. And where the nearest one is. And if you can make it there in time.

I will not say that I am good at this. My tack tends to be drink as little as possible in the hours before I run, get as much of it out as possible in the minutes before I leave, and then put as little as possible back into my body while I’m out and about. And then I spend the rest of the day rehydrating.

That said, I have been trying to do better. It is getting warmer and it’s probably not smart of me to head out the door without a water bottle and expect things to go well. So I’ve been trying to take some water with me when I run. And then I try to listen to my body. If I’m thirsty, I take a sip of water. If I’m still thirsty, I take another sip. Usually little bits of water keep me running without overwhelming my bladder. I figure that’s a balance I can handle.

Does anybody else have a strategy that works for them?

PS Today was National Running Day. If you didn’t get a run in today to celebrate, maybe you can make up for it tomorrow. 🙂

I just wanted to say that I love your blog—I just found it recently, but definitely enjoy it as I am a fellow runner and mama to two boys (just no baby in utero for me;)) I’m impressed you are still so active this pregnancy—you give me hope if I end up going through it all over again!
