Note on New ‘Dos (and Chatting with Hairstylists)

After 8 months of impatiently waiting for my hair to get longer so I could cut it all off again, I got it cut yesterday. Hooray.

I like the somewhat asymmetrical nature of the result, although I’m not sure the stylist intended it. But it makes me feel slightly edgier and less like a dowdy mother of almost 3 children.

And while I often say that getting my hair done – whether by a professional or simply by my boys running their grimy little fingers through it – is one of the most relaxing things in the world to me, chatting with the stylist (or not chatting with the stylist) makes the whole experience a little less relaxing. I want to be sociable. I want to have a nice chat with the lady telling me how wonderfully my head is shaped and how cute this cut is going to be on me. But trying to make that happen stresses me out. As does not trying to make that happen.

Are you chatty when you go to a salon? Or do you prefer to let the pro do his/her work in silence?

  1. I feel very similarly. I love having anything done to my hair, but when I’m getting it cut, I often wish that the stylist would be quiet so that I could enjoy it in peace, but then I feel a little guilty about wishing it.

  3. I tend to not be chatty, but if the stylist asks me questions I try to keep up the conversation. If she wants to talk, I’m fine talking if it’s just normal small talk. But I’d rather not talk about hair. Just because I just feel awkward talking about hair, I’m very simple in my hair choices and frankly don’t know a lot of hair terminology.

Probably smart to let the stylist lead. Maybe she has a hard time concentrating if she’s chatting? I wouldn’t want to distract her.

  4. I was lucky for about two years when it came to hair cuts. My close friend was my stylist so it was always comfortable. But then she moved to Brigham and a couple weeks later I moved to West Jordan. So now I have to start all over!

That stinks. There was a girl in our ward who would come cut my hair at my house for super cheap and do a great job. Sad, sad day when she got married and moved away. Good luck finding a new stylist you like.
