Note on Hanging Out With Yourself

These โ€œnotesโ€ are ideas for essays/longer posts. If you see one that you think would make a good essay/post or that you just want to see what I would do with it, please let me know in the comments or in an e-mail! I would love to take on a challenge like that and give you more of what you want.

โ€“lizzie.

My sister and I had a conversation last week that stemmed from my concern over having a girl. I mean, what if she’s nothing like me? What if we don’t speak the same language? Have nothing to talk about? Can’t stand each other?

But then on the other hand, what if she is exactly like me? Would that be so much better? And so my sister asked: “Would you like to hang out with yourself?”

Sadly enough, I’m not sure of the answer to that question. I think I’d like to hang out with me, and even a half-dozen of me. But it’s not like me to be that confident in myself, so I guess there’s that.

What about you? Would you like to hang out with yourself?

My mom and I didn’t really have much in common. She is athletic and I am not. But despite that we are great friends. I took things from here that I needed such as singing and the obsessive need to think things out on paper. That is what happens with mother and daughters that are opposites.

My daughter and I tend to be exactly the same. We butt heads so often because of that (probably a lot to do with both being the oldest). But we also have a great relationship. We can do more stuff together than my mom and I did, but we trade that with more arguments.

I think the mother-daughter relationship is meant to be strong. There are going to be bumps in the road either way, but if you nurture the relationship and spend time together, then you can get the friendship that both of you need.

  2. I find I’m more and more like both of my parents in different ways as I get older. Kind of creepy, actually. ๐Ÿ™‚ I always thought I was way like my mom, but I’ve got some of both parents in me. Don’t worry too much. You and the little miss will still be outnumbered by the boys. You two will do just fine. ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s right, Jolena. I’d forgotten that we girls are going to need to stick together to defend ourselves with these wild men around. ๐Ÿ™‚ I always hope the baby is just like Micah, but I’m growing on myself a little bit.
